Mark Sutherland ASGFA

I am a South African born British Artist based in the United Kingdom. I relocated to the South East of England in 2005, after my graduate exhibition at the University of South Africa (UNISA). I live and work in Folkestone where I have a studio in the Creative Quarter.

Since the late 1990s I have been creating nudes and portraiture done traditionally in oil, as well as sensitive, bold and atmospheric drawings done in a wide variety of media. Drawing lies at the heart of my artistic practice and I work from a live model at every possible opportunity.

I also create sculptures in wood, metal and felt. Many of my human-scale sculptures are informed by the human body, stilted, distopian communication, and human-mechanical interfaces. Other media and processes used include electronics and programming, recycled materials, storm-fallen trees and an array of axes, adzes and other traditional tools.

I enjoy experimenting with media, materials and process, while always striving for a stable, professional end product.

2017 is the 6th consecutive year that I've had work selected for the prestigious Royal Society of British Artists' annual exhibitions. This year's RBA exhibition is the Society's 300th and will run from 22 March to 1 April 2017 at the Mall Galleries, London. If you would like to go to the Private View, please contact me as i still have a few invitations. I have also had work shown at the annual exhibitions of the New English Arts Club, and in 2016 showed for the first time with the Pastel Society. In 2016 I was elected Associate of the Society of Graphic Fine Art. I have exhibited in many group exhibitions in South Africa and, more recently, in East Kent and London.

Feedback is welcome and I am available for commissions. Contact me to discuss your project.
